Programs, Recursion and Unbounded Choice $84.44 Predicate transformation semantics is the best specification method for the development of correct and wellstructured computer programs. This book is a complete account of the predicate transformation calculus semantics of sequential programs, including repetitions, recursive procedures, computational induction, and unbounded nondeterminacy. The author develops their theory to a greater depth than has been achieved before, and describes it in a way that makes it readily compatible with programming methodology. He gives proofs of the programming rules for partial and total correctness of repetitions and recursive procedures, supplies new rules for proving incorrectness, and a stronger rule for proving that two programs satisfy the same specifications. Finally, the semantics are extended so that nonterminating programs can be specified as well. Author: Hesselink, Wim H./ Wim H., Hesselink/ Van Rijsbergen, C. J. The Evaluation of Matesol Programs in Korea $134.33 The purpose of this study was to begin to fill in the research gap by surveying current teachers perceptions of the effectiveness of MATESOL training programs in Korea. This study explores the unique training needs perceived by Korean teachers and how MA TESOL programs could be best adapted to the Korean educational context. The subjects of this study were 21 MA TESOL graduates and 83 nonTESOL trained teachers currently teaching in a variety of public and private Korean educational settings. Based on the findings, this researcher suggests ways the current MATESOL model used in Korea can be improved to better prepare future EFL teachers. TO be specific, it might be desirable to provide various classes in MATESOL, especially related to current methods and technology, rather than focusing 45 traditional courses. It will give better opportunities for TESOL course takers to choose what they want for their professional development and confidence in teaching. TESOL course also should provide chances for the takers to reflect Korean EFL situation for their teaching. The effectiveness of these suggestions should be empirically examined in the future. RentToOwn Programs by Auyeung, Felix [Paperback] $116.3 RenttoOwn housing programs offer a promising possibility that leverages public and private funds and encourages nonprofit and market cooperation, to develop home ownership and wealth accumulation opportunities for lowincome residents while providing tools and local control for the revitalization process in distressed communities. Their success in existing programs gives hope that there may be a replicable solution available that develops affordable housing for those who need it most, that gives lowincome families a chance to gain ground, and that provides community development corporations a tool for neighborhood revitalization. This book evaluates four such programs across the U.S. and finds that local factors play a strong role in determining what programs are appropriate, that programs must consider feasibility along with constraints, that existing programs demonstrate best practices designed to enhance the quality of life of the residents, and that preparing for owner readiness is a critical key in addition to providing a physical home for a family. Academic Outcomes of Academic Success Programs. $115.71 Three academic performance outcomesgrade point average (GPA), retention rate, and graduation ratewere examined among college students who did and did not participate in one of three academic success programs at Arizona State University. The students were enrolled either in University 100 (UNI 100; N = 8870), Campus Match ( N = 4759), or Summer Bridge (N = 483), or in No Intervention (N = 5570), with all intervention programs aimed at success in academic performance and adaptive campus living. These three programs, along with a no intervention group, constituted the four levels of the independent variable of the studyintervention program. It was hypothesized that students who participated in any of the programs would show higher grade point average (GPA), retention rates, and graduation rates than students who did not participate. It was also hypothesized that students participating in the three programs would have differential outcomes on all three variables, as well, with Campus Match showing the best outcome, followed by Summer Bridge, and UNI 100, in that order. Statistical analyses of the three variables were conducted separately, with corrections for multiple statistical tests. Author: Outlaw, Jaseon S. Government at Work: Best Practices and Model Programs $102.57 This book presents persuasive arguments in support of public service and those who work within it. Clearly, some services should come under government control: public safety, highways, armed and emergency service, water, sewage, parks, schools. Others, however, are operating in answer to problems that society fails to solve. The public sector requires complex problemsolving processes never simple solutions and, despite the negative image imprinted on the public consciousness, Government at Work shows how socalled bureaucrats do a difficult job well. Marc Holzer and Kathe Callahan compile evidence that creativity, productivity and excellence are not strangers to government programmes.
